the relationshit was fallen, up from depths and into sky, where
it dissolved into the clouds and rained back into the earth. this is how i tried to explain it, maybe
i was visiting turkey, where they blacked out all the lights in
anticipation of an imminent attack. i decided to camp on the coast of
the agean with a small fire. out of the emptiness came this lone
soldier, wearing fatigue on his face and carrying a small bottle of
booze and some crackers. we ate and drank and talked as well as we
could, and i realized i didn't know the word for night. i knew the
basics, the days of the week and how to count to ten, but i knew
nothing about the words for night, darkness, shadows. after the
conversation dwindled, i pointed my hand to the dark sky and asked him
"how do you say this?" "parmak," he said. i figured he meant the
stars, or a star, and i hoped my tiny little brain would remember.
the next day i was staying at an infinitely filthy co-op with an older
consumptive woman and our one small light burned out. you need a
bulb in the room to sleep, to keep the mosquitoes distracted. i ran
into a man downstairs in our kitchen and i realized i also didn't know
the word for light, or bulb. so i ask him, "yapmak sen-si olmak an
elektronik parmak?" thinking i could ask him if he had an
"electronic star" to get my point across. he gave me a strange look,
but then followed me upstairs and saw what was wrong and replaced the
bulb. after he left, i thought i should look up parmak. it means
"finger."
feel like i'm good at making shit up right now, not sure why
